Wesco able to ‘Play to my own Standard’

CLEMSON — The Clemson Tigers earned their first touchdown last week and then some, setting team and ACC records and bouncing back big after their loss to Georgia in Week 1.

On the first offensive drive, quarterback Cade Klubnik hit a deep ball to freshman receiver Bryant Wesco Jr., for a 76-yard touchdown, earning the season’s first score of the 2024 season. It was an incredible way for an incoming talent to start his college career.

“At that moment, I kinda blacked out,” Wesco said. “It was a crazy experience for the first touchdown of the season.”

Wesco, a five-star recruit from Midlothian High School in Texas, earned his first start against Appalachian State and showed off his ability. With three catches for 130 yards, the freshman led all receivers in yards.

“The confidence boost is amazing,” Wesco said. “Confidence to go out and play to my own standard. I like to play, instead of playing to the standard of others, I could play to my own standard.”

While his performance was certainly an experience he can use as a boost, Wesco admitted his confidence and abilities from himself, as well as the entire unit, even helped.

“We have that confidence already within our team,” he said. “That’s just what we are supposed to do. Our confidence shouldn’t come from the results of our opponents, it should come from ourselves.”

Quarterback Cade Klubnik reinforced Wesco’s, as well as fellow freshman T.J. Moore’s, confidence before the games even started.

“I think those dudes already had all the confidence they needed,” Klubnik said. “I feel like they just got to go and display it.”

Clemson, No. 21 in the latest Associated Press Poll, will host NC State on Saturday (noon, ABC).
