Watson: ‘I’m Not a Running Back’

Former Clemson star Deshaun Watson met with the media on Wednesday and was asked whether he cares to do more designed quarterback runs, in an effort to help ignite a struggling Cleveland Browns offense.

Watson said that’s not something he’s seeking out for his team’s gameplans.

“I’m not going in there to ask them for more designed runs,” Watson said, laughing. “If I don’t have to run, I’m not going to run. I’m not trying to take any hits.”

“I’m not a running quarterback, in a sense,” he added. “I can make things happen, but I’m not trying to run. I’m not a running back. It’s not my specialty. They signed me to throw the ball, make decisions and be a quarterback, not a runner.”

In three games this season, Watson has completed 57.8 percent of his passes for 551 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions. He has rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

So far this season, Cleveland ranks 31st of 32 NFL teams in total yards per game (248.0), 24th in rushing yards per game (95.7) and 25th in points per game (16.7).

“I won’t say that it won’t help out the offense as far as just the run game,” the three-time Pro Bowler said of designed runs. “But coming back from an injury (shoulder surgery), I don’t think that is high priority for Kevin (Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski) to put me in that situation.”
