On The Matt Barrie Show, ESPN personality Paul Finebaum weighed in on Clemson after the Tigers improved to 3-1 (2-0 ACC) with a dominant 40-14 victory over Stanford last Saturday at Death Valley.
Barrie brought up to Finebaum that the Tigers have “found their groove again” while winning three straight games, with their lone loss this season coming to Georgia in the opener.
“That is now a calling card for the Dawgs,” Finebaum said of the win over Clemson. “They really need Clemson to keep going. Because if Clemson can, for the most part, run the table with only maybe one loss, Georgia looks a lot better if they’re not the SEC Champion.”
Up next for the 15th-ranked Tigers is Saturday’s matchup in Tallahassee against a Florida State team that fell to 1-4 (1-3 ACC) with a blowout 42-16 loss at SMU in the Mustangs’ ACC debut.
“I think of the ACC, I think of the great stories, and then the most obvious ones – Florida State,” Finebaum said. “I mean, there are no words for them.”
“We’ve heard SMU — you’ve seen them — would be an interesting factor, and they are,” Finebaum added. “And Florida State is just, we’ll check back with you next year.”
Finebaum also sounded off on North Carolina head coach Mack Brown, whose Tar Heels (3-2, 0-1 ACC) blew a 20-0 second-half lead in a 21-20 loss at Duke (5-0, 1-0) last Saturday.
“And I’m not going to waste a lot of time on beating a dead horse, but every week, it’s harder to watch the train wreck that is Mack Brown,” Finebaum said of the 73-year-old Hall of Fame coach now in the sixth season of his second stint at UNC.
“That’s a pretty big rivalry in about a 10-square mile area of North Carolina, between Duke and North Carolina. You can’t lose like that. I think his path is to finish the season and do whatever he would like the rest of his life that doesn’t involve being a head coach at North Carolina.”
