ESPN Analyst Weighs in on FSU as CFB’s ‘Most Disappointing Team’

During an episode of College Football Live this week, ESPN analysts Sam Acho and Tom Luginbill weighed in on some of the biggest surprises – and disappointments – so far in the 2024 season.

Acho was quick to name defending ACC champion Florida State as the most disappointing team, in his opinion, after the first month of the season.

Of course, the Seminoles have sputtered to a 1-4 start this season after being ranked No. 10 in the AP preseason poll. It marks the second time FSU has been 1-4 under head coach Mike Norvell.

FSU is coming off a blowout 42-16 loss last Saturday to new ACC member SMU. And the Noles are now without DJ Uiagalelei, as the former Clemson quarterback is expected to miss multiple weeks after he broke a finger on his throwing hand during the game against SMU. Redshirt freshman quarterback Brock Glenn will get the start on Saturday vs. Clemson.

Here’s what Acho had to say about FSU and the Seminoles’ struggles this season:

“I got a chance to broadcast one of Florida State’s games a few weeks ago, and it wasn’t just the quarterback position, DJ Uiagalelei, that struggled. It was also the run game that struggled. Their defense has been up and down. Early in the season we saw them struggle, giving up a few hundred rushing yards, and they got better. But all of a sudden, you go to the SMU game and you’re throwing interception after interception after interception. It wasn’t just misplaced passes – you’re seeing a lot of drops, a lot of missed tackles, at least in the past with their defense. So for me, Florida State has been the most disappointing team, just because there’s so much talent on that team, and they’ve gotten some pieces back. Offensive coordinator Alex Atkins came back two weeks ago, and they’re still not competing at the level you would expect from a premier program.”

Saturday’s game between FSU and No. 15 Clemson at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff on ESPN. The Tigers are currently a 14.5-point favorite.
