Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave a number of injury-related updates following the 15th-ranked Tigers’ 29-13 win over Florida State on Saturday night at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee.
Swinney said starting quarterback Cade Klubnik “just got shook up” in the first quarter when he took a hit while running the ball, and then missed the ensuing play before coming right back into the game.
“They made him come out to make sure he was OK,” Swinney said, adding that Klubnik has “gotta be smart” when running the ball, but “he’s also got to lead his team” and “that was a good play, but he bounced back.”
As for junior wide receiver Adam Randall, he didn’t play against the Seminoles, but Swinney said he was “ready to play” if needed – something Swinney was amazed by, considering Randall just had surgery on Sept. 23 to put a screw in his toe after suffering a stress fracture in his toe last month.
“I’m glad we didn’t have to play him, but he was here and ready to play,” Swinney said. “Just amazing to me. Absolutely amazing.”
Sophomore defensive lineman Peter Woods, meanwhile, returned to action against FSU after missing the past two games after taking a hit to the knee against App State on Sept. 7.
Swinney said he hopes Woods can be a full participant in practice next week.
“He’s been day-to-day, and today was the day,” Swinney said. “Hopefully he can have a real full practice next week. We kind of had to climatize him back last week, so hopefully he can have a really full week of practice, and that’s going to help him just kind of get back into football mode because he hasn’t played since the first half of the App game. So, nice to have him back out there as well.”
Additionally, Swinney said sophomore offensive lineman Harris Sewell and redshirt freshman defensive lineman Stephiylan Green, both of whom weren’t on Clemson’s travel roster for the FSU game, were out due to injury but Swinney expects both to be back next week.
Swinney also gave an update on redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Collin Sadler, who was on the travel roster for the FSU game after being listed as unavailable for last week’s game against Stanford.
“He had a little bit of a flare-up this week, so he wasn’t really able to practice. Did a little bit on Thursday,” Swinney said. “But he actually felt pretty good tonight. He and Adam were kind of in the same category – could play if we needed them. But I’m thankful we were able to hold both of them.”
Clemson (4-1, 3-0 ACC) will hit the road again next week and try to earn their fifth straight victory this season when they face Wake Forest on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C. (12 p.m., ESPN).
