Browns Provide Watson Surgery Update

Unfortunately, former Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson is out for the rest of the 2024 season after tearing his Achilles in the second quarter of the Cleveland Browns’ 21-14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 20 in Week 7.

This weekend, the Browns provided an update on Watson following his surgery, saying in a statement that the surgery was successful:

QB Deshaun Waston underwent successful surgery today to repair his ruptured right Achilles tendon. The surgery was performed by Dr. Bob Anderson, a foot and ankle specialist in Charlotte, NC, and a full recovery is expected.

Watson, who was placed on IR on Oct. 22, completed 63.4 percent of his passes for 1,148 yards and five touchdowns with three interceptions in seven games this season. He also ran for 148 yards and another score on the ground.

This is just the latest setback for Watson, who has faced plenty of adversity in recent seasons, on and off the field. Watson played in just six games in his first season with Cleveland after having to serve a suspension and he was limited to just six games last season due to injury.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney recently commented on Watson’s season-ending injury.

“I absolutely reached out to him and just tried to encourage him and lift him up. And just praying for him,” Swinney said. “I mean, it’s a tough setback for him. I mean, he’s still young. He’s got a lot of football in front of him. We saw Aaron Rodgers playing last night. He’s about 40 coming off of a torn Achilles.”

“It’s tough, because he was starting to play pretty good and get back in rhythm,” Swinney added. “Obviously a big setback for him. But you just got to keep going. You can’t and let it keep you down. You just got to bounce back and he will.”

A three-time Pro Bowler, Watson has a 66.2 completion percentage for his career with 17,904 passing yards and 123 passing touchdowns with 48 interceptions in 73 career games with the Browns and Houston Texans after being selected by Houston in the first round (12th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.
