CLEMSON — Clemson United wrapped up its final regular season home game against the Wofford Terriers, winning 2-1 in a close-fought match at Historic Riggs Field on Tuesday night.
Forward Tyler Trimnal scored a goal late in the second period to increase United’s lead to two, but all wasn’t over. Wofford earned a penalty kick attempt a few minutes later and scored their first goal, with midfielder Stewart Patnaud keeping it close for the Terriers.
They couldn’t earn another in the last two minutes, as Clemson held on to win their final home match of the season.
“We were pretty persistent through the first half and finally broke through,” head coach Mike Noonan said. “They set up to defend really well and they were very organized…finally we got through on a break, Alex got taken down, Joran deposited the penalty, and it was a lot better in the locker room in halftime than without it.”
As many of Clemson’s matches this season have gone, the team started slowly while maintaining control of the ball and putting up shots. United took 10 shots in the first half, with back-to-back shots by Ransford Gyan and Remi Okunlola being saved by Wofford goalkeeper Leo Ledin.
The Tigers finally broke through the defense of the Terriers with the penalty kick goal from Gerbet, sealing off a nice ending to the first half for Clemson.
“We just gotta keep working, stick to our game plan,” Trimnal said. “Our goal was to keep our foot on the gas and try to get the second goal to try and kill the game, but Wofford did a really good job.”
With the start of the second half, Clemson came back onto the field continuing to put pressure on the Terriers, earning more shots and maintaining a bulk of the possession.
After another period of battling back and forth, Clemson found another goal, when forward Tyler Trimnal caught a pass in the box and sent it into the left side of the net for their game-sealing score with a little over six minutes left.
“James flicks it right to me, it’s a perfect flick, and then I just tap it in,” Trimnal said after the game. “It’s really more of a team goal than my goal.”
The Terriers earned a penalty kick of their own with only a few minutes left and scored their first goal in an attempt to come back and equalize. Their efforts were a little too late, however, and Clemson held on to win heading into its final regular season game against conference foe Virginia Tech on Friday.
“We’ve got to go and take care of our business too, right?,” Noonan said. “It’s another ACC team on the road. Those are not easy points to get, and Virginia Tech is a very, very good team.”
