Swinney on Possibility of Tyler Brown Redshirting

With just five weeks remaining in Clemson’s regular season and Tyler Brown still out due to an ankle injury, there is a possibility the sophomore wideout could redshirt this season.

Brown was injured in the second game of the season against App State, playing just five snaps the following week again the Mountaineers. He then missed the next game against NC State. He would return the following week, logging 17 snaps against Stanford and then played 22 more in the win over Florida State.

However, Brown has missed the last two games with the same ankle injury that eventually required a tightrope surgery and Dabo Swinney has already ruled the freshman All-American out for this week’s contest against Louisville. With the Tigers only having five more regular season games, the head coach was asked about Brown missing those games and taking a redshirt this season.

“I mean, that’s a possibility for sure, with where he is with the amount of games that he’s played,” Swinney said during his weekly press conference on Tuesday. “We have five games left, so if he misses a couple of more, then that is a decision”

However, with where Clemson is in the season, Swinney went on to say that no decision has been made as of yet and that the staff would just have to wait and see where Brown is in a couple of weeks. The health of the rest of the wide receiver room could also factor into the decision.

“Those are real-time things, you got to try to win the game you play,” Swinney added. “You don’t ever know what your situation is going to look like in two weeks. So, that is certainly something we could look at.”

In the four games he has appeared in, Brown has five catches for 30 yards. As a freshman last season, he led Clemson in both receptions (52) and receiving yards (531). He also had four touchdown catches.

If Brown were to miss the final five games of the regular season and redshirt, that wouldn’t necessarily mean his season is over. Brown would still be able to play in any postseason games, including a potential ACC Championship Game, and keep his redshirt.

“That would be great if he could,” Swinney said. “But that is kind of a real-time decision based on your personnel.”
