New Record ‘Special’ for Briningstool

BLACKSBURG, VA – Jake Bringingstool etched his name in the Clemson record books during the 23rd ranked Tigers’ 24-14 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday at Lane Stadium.

The senior tight end’s 12-yard touchdown catch that put Clemson up 21-7 early in the third quarter was the 113th reception of his career, setting a new program record, breaking the old mark that was set by Jordan Leggett.

Briningstool would finish the night with three catches for 39 yards and that touchdown catch put him ever so closer to that program record as well. He needs just three more to tie Leggett’s career mark of 18, which also an all-time high for the program.

“We’ve had a lot of really great tight ends, but I am really happy for that young man,” head coach Dabo Swinney said. “He has worked really hard and he is chasing that touchdown record too. He is probably about three behind or so. Probably should already have that honestly because we have missed a few of those this year, but I am really happy for him. He is a great competitor and he has a bright, bright future. And that is a great record because we have had some really good ones.”

After the win, Briningstool dove into what setting the record means to him.

“It’s pretty special for me,” Briningstool said. “There have been a lot of great tight ends that have played here. A lot of great tight ends on the team now. It is a pretty cool accomplishment, but I am ready to keep going.”

However, while the record holds a lot of meaning for Briningstool, he’s just looking to pay it forward. As his career at Clemson winds down, the senior is looking to lead a tight end room that is littered with talent. Briningstool just wants to pass down what he’s learned to every guy behind him on the depth chart.

“The thing I am most proud of I think is just being able to lead the younger guys,” Briningstool said. “Being that example tight end for guys like Olsen (Patt-Henry), guys like Markus (Dixon), even Christian (Bentancur). Just being the example for guys to look up to. I had a lot of guys in front of me that played the position at a high level that did a pretty good job of teaching me and bringing me along. Just being able to reciprocate that and pass down that knowledge.”
