Clemson One Spot Ahead of Rival in Latest ESPN Power Rankings

ESPN recently released its latest college football power rankings, re-stacking its top 25 teams following Week 11 of the season.

Following last Saturday’s 24-14 victory over Virginia Tech at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Va., Clemson (7-2, 6-1 ACC) slid up to No. 19 in ESPN’s updated power rankings – one spot ahead of rival South Carolina, which won at Vanderbilt, 28-7, on Saturday.

The Tigers were previously ranked 20th in ESPN’s power rankings after their upset loss to Louisville at Death Valley on Nov. 2 in Week 10.

Here’s what ESPN had to say about Clemson coming off the win at Virginia Tech:

At halftime against Virginia Tech, Clemson was scoreless and trailing by a touchdown thanks to yet another blocked kick. It might’ve been a recipe for disaster, but Cade Klubnik finally found a spark in the second half, finishing the game by throwing for 211 yards and three touchdowns.

Phil Mafah ran for 128 yards, too, and the defense — much maligned after a dismal performance against Louisville — put together its best game of the year, holding the Hokies to just 40 yards rushing in a 24-14 win. The Tigers are playing to an inside straight, but with Miami’s Week 11 loss, the door is still cracked open for Clemson to make a run at the ACC title game.

Oregon (Week 11 win vs. Maryland) stayed at No. 1 in ESPN’s latest power rankings, ahead of Ohio State (Week 11 win vs. Purdue) at No. 2. Texas (Week 11 win vs. Florida), Tennessee (Week 11 win vs. Mississippi State) and Indiana (Week 11 win vs. Michigan) round out the updated top five.

Miami dropped outside of the top five, falling five spots to No. 9 after its upset loss at Georgia Tech last Saturday. SMU, which had an open date on Saturday, is now ranked No. 14, while Louisville (No. 21) re-entered ESPN’s power rankings and rounds out the ACC teams in the power rankings.

Clemson moved up to No. 20 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday, while the Tigers moved up two spots to No. 17 in the latest AP Top 25 Poll released after Week 11, and moved up one spot to No. 16 in the latest Coaches Poll after Week 11.

After winning its seventh straight game against Virginia Tech, Clemson will return to the field this Saturday when it faces off against Pitt – the Tigers’ final road game and final ACC contest of the 2024 regular season. Kickoff at the Panthers’ Acrisure Stadium is set for 12 p.m. on ESPN.
