Clemson Freshman Steps up at Right Time

CLEMSON – A freshman stepped up in the victory against the Virginia Tech Hokies, and his success wasn’t kept quiet.

During the game last weekend, Clemson offensive lineman Tristan Leigh left with an ankle injury on the opening drive, forcing a need for a replacement. That is when Elyjah Thurmon stepped in.

In his matchup with Virginia Tech’s defensive line, Thurmon came in and played very well, helping protect Cade Klubnik and serving as a great spot filler. He earned a lot of praise for his performance, especially from the head coach.

“He’s a really special talent,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said. “He’s really smart. He understands the game, and, again, he’s played five positions, so he just sees it differently.”

Not only has Thurmon been known as a special talent in college, but he was a highly-viewed talent in high school. Especially for his versatility and intelligence. It sounds as though Thurmon himself uses his talents to prepare for times like those.

“I put the work in during the week to be able to go out there if needed, and if my number is called, I’m going to be ready,” the freshman said. “When Coach [Matt] Luke called me, it was just, ‘Go play your game, be confident in yourself, and the guys around you trust you, so just be able to go out there and be ready.'”

Thurmon certainly played his game, and from his performance against the Hokies, combined with his in-game time from the previous games this season, the freshman could see some more involvement moving forward.
