CLEMSON – Clemson hopes to finish the ACC regular season on a high note when the 20th-ranked Tigers take on Pittsburgh Saturday at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Cornerback Ashton Hampton spoke with the media earlier this week about his interception at Virginia Tech that made the top 10 on SportsCenter.
–Hampton was asked when he found out that his interception had made the top 10. With a big smile on his face, he said, “We were on the bus back. I was just on Twitter scrolling and I saw somebody say it was number three on SportsCenter and I was like oh that’s kind of cool right there.”
–The play before his interception, the cornerback gave up a big 30-yard play. He said his mindset after that was, “Next play mentality.” He added, “At the end of the day, he’s on scholarship too. He is going to make some plays too. I made a play the next play.”
–The freshman said, “Being in the mix felt great. I’ve been working hard. I’ve been making sure I do better in my technique, making sure I’m increasing my effort.” Those types of things are what he thinks have allowed his hard work to start paying off an get recognized.
He said he is happy about the position he is him and glad the coaches have “put me in a position to show off my talents.”
–From a young age, Hampton has been connected with Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed. He said that Reed is somewhat similar to how his dad is. He said, “They act the same and they dress the same. It’s kind of funny to be to be honest. He’s a great guy and a great coach.” He later said they even have the same kind of jokes.
