Swinney: ‘I don’t know what targeting is anymore’

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was animated following Clemson’s 24-20 win over Pittsburgh Saturday at Acrisure Stadium.

When asked about the referees’ fourth-quarter personal foul call on Dee Crayton, one in which they did not drop a flag, Swinney went on a rant about the call and what the refs relayed to him on the sideline.

In the process, Swinney also brought up his feelings on a second-quarter targeting call on freshman linebacker Sammy Brown, who was ejected from the game.

“I do not know what targeting is anymore. I don’t,” Swinney said.

Brown was thrown out of the game after he hit Panthers’ quarterback Nate Yarnell right after he threw the football late in the second quarter. Brown hit Yarnell a second after he threw the pass and in the middle of his chest.

The officials on the field called targeting and replay upheld the call. Swinney was baffled by the call. He even referred to the targeting call that was overturned in Miami’s controversial win over Cal that allowed the Hurricanes to get the ball back in the final minutes to go win the game.

“There was a targeting (call) in the Cal-Miami game earlier this year… I don’t know what targeting is anymore,” Swinney said. “I really don’t. I have coached and I have been doing this for a long time. I do not know what it is, it changes every week. So, some tough, tough breaks on both sides.”

When asked if he was referring to Brown’s targeting call, Swinney reaffirmed he does not understand what targeting is or isn’t anymore.

“I am going to have to go to a seminar in the off-season or something,” he said. “Targeting anonymous or something. I don’t know. I don’t know what it is. I really don’t. I have no idea. I don’t know what it is. I really don’t.”

Brown’s ejection was a big play because the Tigers were already down one starting linebacker with Wade Woodaz unavailable due to injury.
