Pitt’s Narduzzi Comments on Clemson’s Last Minute Win

PITTSBURGH, Pa, — Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi felt bad for his seniors on Saturday, as No. 20 Clemson rallied with a last-minute touchdown to beat the Panthers 24-20 at Acrisure Stadium.

The Tigers win snapped Pitt’s six-game win streak on Senior Day.

“Well, one heck of a football game, I can tell you that,” Narduzzi said. “I feel bad for our seniors. Wanted to get it for those guys. We had a six-game win streak on senior day and our kids fought their tails off.

“As usual, it’s a team loss. We did it together. There’s plays on offense, defense that you wish you had back, but I love the group in there. They fought their tails off to the end. Didn’t go our way. Game of inches.”

The Panthers’ game plan was to shut down Clemson running back Phil Mafah, which they did. They held the ACC’s second best rusher to a season low 17 yards on 17 carries.

They held the Tigers (8-2, 7-1 ACC) to 58 rushing yards overall, the second lowest output of the season for Clemson. However, when it mattered most, they could not stop Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik.

The junior, who also threw for two touchdowns, ran 50 yards for the game-winning score on a quarterback draw with 1:16 to play in the game.

“Yeah, thanks for reminding me,” Narduzzi said “Georgia held them to 38, that was the low on the year, so that tells you what kind of performance our kids did.

“Mafah really couldn’t get anything going all day. It was a great performance by our defense in rush defense, and then you give up a quarterback draw, which was the one. They got 58 total yards, and they got 50 on the last play. I don’t know if that answers your question, but yeah.”

Up until Klubnik’s touchdown run, Pitt held the Tigers to 27 total yards though the first 28 minutes of the second half.

“We pitched a shut-out defensively in the second half until 1:36 in the game and the quarterback draw, which they’ve run quarterback draws,” Narduzzi said. “They got us in a good coverage for it. Our stunt up front probably wasn’t as clean as you’d like. We’ll look at the tape. I briefly saw it from an iPad but was focused on the two-minute for our offense at the end.”
