Tayveon Wilson became the fourth member of the Clemson 2026 recruiting class on Thursday.
The 3-star tight end, out of Huntington, is arguably the top recruit in the state of West Virginia and was the first player at the position to pick up an offer from the Tigers in his class. He announced the decision during a ceremony at his high school.
Wilson attended a session of Dabo Swinney’s high school camp back in June, impressing tight ends coach Kyle Richardson so much that he became Clemson’s top target at the position. He is still one of just two tight ends in the 2026 class to hold an offer from the Tigers.
His next visit came for Homecoming in October, when Clemson blew out Stanford. That is when Wilson knew where he wanted to play college football.
“I knew it was going to be Clemson after the game day visit,” Wilson told The Clemson Insider. “Just how well all the coaches treated me. I told coach Richardson and coach Swinney about a week and a half ago and they were both pumped up on facetime.”
While the atmosphere certainly impressed, it was Swinney and the rest of his coaching staff that ultimately made the difference.
“The atmosphere of the game was amazing,” Wilson added. “The coaching staff treated me like no other while I was on my visit.”
While Wilson also took gameday visits to Penn State, West Virginia and Virginia Tech, it was Clemson that resonated the most. A big part of that was Richardson, who was a real difference-maker.
“We’ve just been connecting through FaceTime, text messages and phone calls and that’s really helped build our relationship,” Wilson said. “I like how he uses his tight ends, especially (Jake) Brinningstool in the slot sometimes because that’s where I play.”
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound prospect has spent a lot of his time in high school lining up at receiver, and he is anxious to embrace the challenge of moving to tight end.
“I’ve played tight end in a couple of sets at my high school,” Wilson said. “I look forward to seeing how it goes to the next level.”
The talented prospect said he expects to be back on campus in January, while also noting he doesn’t think he will be an early enrollee.
