Haynes Finally Gets Loose

CLEMSON — When Jay Haynes broke free for his 70-yard touchdown run in the second quarter of No. 17 Clemson’s 51-14 victory over The Citadel on Saturday, quarterback Cade Klubnik pointed the way with the No. 1 sign.

The Clemson quarterback then looked over to the bench and did it there, it was obvious Klubnik was excited to watch the redshirt freshman have his moment in the sun.

“We all have seen Jay Haynes in practice. We have seen him rip off runs like that, but he really has not had that, obviously, with [Phil] Mafah,” Swinney said. “He has had some good plays, but he has not had the chance to really get loose in the field.”

Haynes got loose a couple of times, as he rushed for 118 yards on just five carries and scored 2 TDs.

“He is a kid that is gaining his confidence still,” Swinney said. “It was awesome to see. He has some juice.”

Clemson recruited Haynes out of Handley High School in Roanoke, Ala., where Swinney saw him play several times. The running back ran for 2,669 yards and 37 touchdowns in his last two years at Handley.

“The first time I watched this kid, and I am watching him and no one is recruiting him,” Swinney said. “What I am missing? Is there something wrong? Is there something we do not know about here?

“This kid can play, man. This is a good football player. He is a really good player.”

A player the Tigers look forward to seeing for several more years in Death Valley.
