Sunday Injury Updates: Swinney Optimistic for ‘Best-Case Scenario’ Against Gamecocks

Clemson is hoping to have a few of its injured players back for the rivalry game against South Carolina.

The Tigers were without multiple starters on both sides of the ball in the blowout win over The Citadel and during his weekly Zoom call on Sunday, Dabo Swinney was asked about their status heading into rivalry week.

“Hopefully get a few guys back this week health-wise that hopefully will give us a best case scenario from a personnel standpoint, as we get ready to take on a really really good South Carolina team,” Swinney said.

Starting RG Marcus Tate has missed the last three games with an injury and starting LT Tristan Leigh has been out the last two. Leigh was injured very early in the win over Virginia Tech, missing all but the first nine offensive snaps of that contest.

“We’re hopeful that we’re going to get our linemen back,” Swinney said. “That’s what we’re hoping. They ran (Sunday). We’ll see how they look (Monday) night. I think by Tuesday, I’ll have a little better feel, but we’re trending in a good direction. Hopefully that will stay the case.”

Clemson was also without starting TE Jake Briningstool with what Swinney described as a minor hamstring strain.

On the defensive side, R.J. Mickens was held, despite dressing out for the game on Saturday. Mickens left the comeback win over Pitt after getting banged up in the second half.

“We should get Brinny back,” Swinney said. “Brinny just had a little strain in his hamstring. Kind of tweaked that, and wasn’t able to go this week. So should get him back. He was feeling a lot better, so feel good about that. I do think we’ll get RJ back as well. He is trending in a good direction.”
