Donovan Murph’s official visit to Clemson went about as well as it could have gone.
The 4-star wide receiver, out of Irmo, traveled to the Upstate late Friday after his high school team’s 38-7 playoff win over Chapin. Both of his parents, his siblings, and one of his grandparents also made the trip.
“The visit was great,” Murph told The Clemson Insider. “I had a great time with my family and it was just an awesome time.”
With Murph set to announce a commitment on January 3 during the Under Armor All-American Game on ESPN, he is trying to take in as much as possible on these final visits. He has also been to South Carolina twice in recent weeks, with one of those being an official visit.
At the same time, Murph is also laser-focused on finishing up his high school career on a high note. This week, Irmo hosts West Florence as the Yellow Jackets continue their quest for a state title.
“Yeah, we going to be playing for a while,” Murph said. “We winning that state championship.”
Murph was originally a member of the 2026 recruiting class and was actually the first wide receiver in the class to pick up an offer from Clemson. However, in October, Murph announced he was reclassifying to the 2025 class.
Murph was always interested in playing in the UA All-American Game, but after deciding he would reclassify, he wasn’t sure he’d be able to. Once it was decided he would in fact play in the game, he knew that’s where he wanted to announce his commitment.
Playing in front of a national audience also provides Murph an opportunity to show just how undervalued he is by some of the recruiting services. Not a single service ranks him inside the Top 20 at his position.
“So I reclassed, and I wasn’t sure if I was still gonna make the All-American game,” Murph said. “But I got the call and they told me it was possible for me to do it on ESPN at Disney World. When that came about I told them I was open to doing it and I told him that that’s something that I wanted to do.”
The 6-foot-2 wideout also visited Clemson earlier in the season for the Tigers blowout win over NC State. This time, he saw the same thing as last, an offense that isn’t afraid to lean on freshmen receivers.
“Just all the receivers that I’ve been seeing on the field, freshmen receivers at that, that are having great seasons,” Murph said. “Cade (Klubnik) is throwing them boys the ball. It don’t really matter how young you are, you’re gonna be in the system. And just knowing the way they treat me. They treat me like family. I can tell that they really want me to be there.”
This is a battle that most believe has come down to in-state rivals Clemson and South Carolina. Although, Murph has also said he really likes Ole Miss and Colorado and that both are in it.
As for Clemson, Murph said the Tigers made a move with him over the weekend. And a substantial one. With the rivalry game coming up this weekend, a win over the Gamecocks could really help Clemson’s cause, and there’s some chatter that he will be back on campus to witness the matchup firsthand.
“They helped themselves out a lot,” Murph said. “It definitely has me thinking that is somewhere that I want to be.”
