Dead Heat: Clemson-South Carolina Tied at Halftime

CLEMSON – No. 12 Clemson and No. 15 South Carolina are deadlocked at 7-7 as we head to halftime here at Memorial Stadium.

Halftime Analysis

– The Tigers have been able to move the ball against the South Carolina defense. Clemson has 227 total yards and it’s been fairly balanced, with 80 of those being rushing yards. The Tigers are averaging 4.7 yards per carry.

– Cade Klubnik has had a pretty good half throwing the football, hitting on 10-of-16 for 148 yards. Having said that, there was one throw he probably wants back. On the drive after the Gamecocks tied it at 7-7, Klubnik had Bryant Wesco open down the field but overshot him. The Tigers would ultimately punt. Klubnik has hit on three passing plays that have went for 25-yards or more.

– If Clemson is going to win this game, Klubnik’s legs are going to have to keep being a factor. His 13-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter was a thing of beauty. Garrett Riley schemed the middle of the field open and called the QB draw as just the right time.

– The Tigers also have to be better on third downs. The offense was just 1-of-5 in the opening half. They were also stuffed on the fourth and one when Payton Page missed a block.

– So far so good for those freshman wideouts. Both Wesco and T.J. Moore have won one-on-one matchups and made plays down the field. Antonio Williams already has five catches for 75 yards.

– The defense is doing a lot of really good things but they have to be better at getting LaNorris Sellers down on the ground. To be fair. most teams have had issues in that department, but the redshirt freshman has not only made something out of nothing a couple of times, Sellers has turned those into big plays, including a 25-yard scoring run that tied the game at 7-7. He already has XX rushing yards, which is more than he averages in a full game.

– Speaking of the defense and doing good things, the Tigers have sacked Sellers three times already. That number should be at least five, possibly six. They also had five tackles for loss and have forced the game’s only turnover so far.
