Saban, Herbstreit Comment on Clemson’s Chances Against Texas

Odds are stacked against Clemson in the 2024 College Football Playoff and it’s to be expected after barely squeaking into the No. 12 seed.

Nonetheless, the Tigers have their chance to cement themselves in Austin against No. 12 Texas. ESPN’s College GameDay hosts detailed the keys to the game and Nick Saban discussed what he believes are the keys to the game.

Saban agreed with Rece Davis that the Longhorns are the best defense that Garrett Riley’s unit has taken on and that’ll be the matchup to watch.

“I think the number one thing in this game is can Clemson offense sustain drives against Texas’ defense,” Saban said. “They have more three-and-outs than almost anybody in college football and can Clemson limit Texas explosive plays and make them drive it through the red area and then can Texas handle Clemson’s pressure so Ewers can operate? I think those are the three things that are really imperative for this game.”

Take a look at the ACC Championship for example. TJ Parker’s strip sack on the opening drive set the pace and that same success against Quinn Ewers can stop Texas from finding its offensive footing.

Saban’s sentiments were further detailed by Kirk Herbstreit, who said he doesn’t believe the Tigers, let alone anyone can complete long drives against the Longhorns defense.

“I think (Clemson) is going against the best defense in the country,” Herbstreit said. “What Coach Saban said is very true, can you sustain drives? It’s been very challenging for Clemson, now they’re going up against Texas. Texas doesn’t give up any big plays. They’re second in the nation in allowing 20 yards or more.”

It’s a clash of an offense fueled by big plays and a defense that refuses to allow it. Something has to give and the execution of Riley’s scheme is will decide Clemson’s fate in the College Football Playoff.
