CLEMSON – Clemson remains unbeaten in ACC play after the Tigers knocked off Cal 80-68 on Saturday night inside Littlejohn Coliseum.
Chase Hunter and Ian Schieffelin both had big nights. Schieffelin led the way for the Tigers, scoring 21 points while pulling down six rebounds. Hunter added 19 on 8-of-12 shooting. He also had six assists and five rebounds.
Chauncey Wiggins had another solid outing, finishing with 15 points, going 7-of-10 from the floor. He also pulled down three rebounds and dished out two assists.
Cal’s Andrej Stojaković led all scorers with 30 points on 11-of-15 shooting.
42 of the Tiger’s points came in the paint, as Clemson shot 62% from the field and 44% from beyond the arc, while the Bears shot 46%. Clemson also won the battle on the boards, outrebounding Cal 33-22.
A 16-6 run by the Tigers about midway through the second half gave Clemson a commanding 64-50 lead that the team would never relinquish.
Clemson led by as many as nine points in the first half and had opportunities to take control, but seven turnovers over the first 20 minutes of play led to 12 Cal points. After the Bears’ Andrej Stojaković banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer, the Tigers would take just a 39-36 lead into the break.
Clemson improves to 12-3 overall and 4-0 in ACC play, while the Golden Bears fall to 7-7 and 0-3.
It Was Over When
C. Hunter slammed home a monster dunk with just over six minutes left that gave the Tigers a 68-55 lead. The Bears were never able to get the deficit back to single digits after the play.
Injury Report
Lakhin was listed as questionable ahead of the game due to an illness and did not play in the first half. The big man took part in pregame but never came out of his warmups until after halftime. Despite not taking a shot in his 14 minutes of action, the Tigers missed his physical presence in that first half. With him on the floor in the second half, Clemson was clearly the better team.
