A signal caller from Clemson’s in-state rival is headed to the ACC.
South Carolina transfer quarterback Robby Ashford committed to Wake Forest on Sunday.
The 6-foot-2, 229-pound redshirt senior has one year of eligibility remaining and will spend his final season playing for new Demon Deacons coach Jake Dickert, who is replacing Dave Clawson after he resigned following 11 seasons as Wake Forest’s coach.
Ashford is a former four-star prospect who was ranked by ESPN as the No. 168 overall prospect in the 2020 recruiting class coming out of Hoover (Ala.) High School.
Ashford explained to ESPN why he decided to join the Demon Deacons for the 2025 campaign.
“Just what Coach Dickert is building and his vision for the program and wanting to win now,” Ashford said. “And the opportunity to come in and be the guy.”
A dual-threat QB, Ashford originally signed with Oregon coming out of high school. He spent two years there and then two years at Auburn before transferring to South Carolina prior to the 2024 season.
Overall in his college career, Ashford has completed 51.8 percent of his passes for 2,082 yards and 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions and has rushed for 1,154 yards and 14 touchdowns on 240 career carries.
Ashford redshirted as a true freshman at Oregon and didn’t see any game action in his two years with the Ducks (2020-21) before transferring to Auburn ahead of the 2022 season.
Ashford became Auburn’s starter in Week 4 and held that position for the remainder of the 2022 season. He made nine starts and was selected as the Tigers’ Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for 1,613 yards and seven touchdowns, to go with 710 rushing yards and seven rushing scores.
As a redshirt junior in 2023, Ashford was Auburn’s backup quarterback and played in 10 games, passing for 145 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions while also rushing 46 times for 217 yards and five touchdowns.
Ashford, who served as the backup to LaNorris Sellers at South Carolina in 2024, appeared in eight games (one start) with the Gamecocks and completed 23 of his 32 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns. He added 227 rushing yards and two scores on 41 carries.
