College football coaches have backed a new transfer portal window.

FBS coaches, meeting in Charlotte this week, unanimously voted in favor of a proposal to shrink transfer windows down to one 10-day period in January, according to ESPN.

Under the proposal, the lone window to enter the portal would be from Jan. 2-12. The portal window change could happen as soon as the 2025-26 season, if it gets final approval from the NCAA Division I council.

“These recommendations are intended to allow a student-athlete and coaches more opportunity to focus on their season while preserving the opportunities for students who choose to transfer to still be able to do so for a traditional spring semester,” AFCA president Craig Bohl said, via ESPN. “We looked at all kinds of information. I’m convinced our coaches care deeply about the student-athletes, so this decision was made through the filter of allowing them more stability and to be able to move forward.”

If approved, the 10-day period in January would cut out the December and April portal windows. As ESPN noted, “The January window would, in theory, allow players to conclude their season with their existing teams while still finding a new home early enough to enroll for a spring semester and go through spring football with their new program.”

Currently, there is a 20-day winter transfer portal window in December, and a 10-day spring window in April.
