Lawrence, Etienne Have Their New Head Coach in Jacksonville

Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne and the Jacksonville Jaguars have their new head coach.

On Friday, the Jaguars announced they have hired Liam Coen as their next head coach.

One of 10 coaching candidates interviewed by the Jaguars, Coen becomes the franchise’s third head coach in five years, following Urban Meyer (2021) and Doug Pederson (2022-24).

The 39-year-old Coen is now the youngest head coach in Jaguars history and replaces Pederson, who was fired on Jan. 6. Pederson compiled a 22-29 record across his three seasons in Jacksonville. After finishing 9-8 in both 2022 and 2023, Jacksonville went 4-13 this past season. Pederson helped lead the Jaguars to the AFC South title and a playoff victory in 2022, but he lost 18 of his final 23 games.

Coen has been an assistant coach for 15 seasons, with five of those campaigns at the NFL level. He was highly successful this past season as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator while working with quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Prior to his lone season as Tampa Bay’s OC in 2024, Coen’s previous NFL coaching experience came as an assistant wide receivers coach for the Los Angeles Rams (2018-19), assistant quarterbacks coach for the Rams (2020) and offensive coordinator for the Rams (2022).

Before his stint with Tampa Bay, Coen served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Kentucky for the 2023 and 2021 seasons.
