Highly-Recruited OL Says Opportunity to Play at Clemson Would Be a ‘Privilege’

Clemson offensive line coach Matt Luke racked up the frequent flyer miles during the contact period.

Luke made stops throughout the country visiting with current targets and several prospects that have yet to receive an offer from the Tigers.

One of those unoffered players was 4-star Drew Evers, out of Flower Mound in Texas. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound recruit was a little familiar with Clemson due to his older brother Nick, a quarterback in the 2022 class.

“I actually first connected with Clemson because of my brother Nick. He and Cade Klubnik were at the Elite 11 Finals together a few years ago and only had positive things to say,” Evers told The Clemson Insider. “But my relationship with Coach Luke recently started to grow. They do things a little slower at Clemson because they want the right guys for their culture, which I can respect.”

Luke did an in-home visit with Evers, a meeting that lasted multiple hours. Offensive coordinator Garrett Riley also made a stop by his high school.

“Coach Luke said he specifically came to Texas to see me so we could really spend time with each other,” Evers said. “He was at my house for a few hours which was great for me and my family. By the time he left, he said ‘You’re 100% a Clemson guy, exactly what we look for here.'”

Now Evers has learned a little more about what Clemson has to offer.

“The family culture, the desire and commitment to develop,” he said. “And the education and support you get as a student-athlete.”

It’s widely known that Clemson doesn’t typically offer players who have not visited. It’s the only box that Evers has yet to check, although that should change in the spring.

“I’m planning to be there for a spring practice for sure,” Evers said. “I want to see Coach Luke in action, spend time with Coach Swinney, and get a vibe for the campus.”

Currently, Evers has more than 30 offers. He is being pursued by some of the better programs in the country, including Alabama, Georgia, Penn State, LSU, Oregon and defending national champion Ohio State.

An offer from Clemson is one he’s looking to add to his expansive list.

“I believe they’ve only offered between 40-50 guys, so if I’m one of them when I come for a visit, that puts you in elite company,” Evers said. “It would be a privilege and something I would take seriously.”

Evers is a Top 250 talent per the 247 Composite Rankings and ranks No. 15 among all interior linemen.

While he has no definitive date for making a decision, he does know he’d like to be committed before the start of his senior season. He plans to take some visits in the spring and follow that up with some officials in the summer before making that decision.

“Relationships with my head coach, position coach, and strength and conditioning coach,” Evers said of what he’s looking for. “Clearly, the education and support to get my degree. I also am looking for a family atmosphere and life after football network of people that I can tap into after I hang up the cleats.”
