Which NFL team, in particular, should prioritize former Clemson star Tee Higgins when NFL free agency starts next month?
CBS Sports recently played “free agency matchmaker” and listed one free agent each team should make a priority when the free agency signing period begins in March.
Higgins was pegged as the player that should be a priority for the Washington Commanders.
“The Commanders have plenty of work to do on the defensive side of the ball this offseason, but they also can’t run it back with what they have at wide receiver,” CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani wrote. “Jayden Daniels needs someone other than Terry McLaurin to throw the ball to, and Tee Higgins is arguably the top free agent in this entire class. The 26-year-old caught a career-high 10 touchdowns this past season in just 12 games played.”
Playing under the franchise tag with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2024, Higgins was limited by injuries but still posted 73 catches for 911 yards, and his 10 touchdown catches tied for sixth most in the NFL.
Higgins has amassed 330 catches for 4,595 yards and 34 touchdowns over his first five NFL seasons (2020-24) after being selected by the Bengals in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft.
After making over $21 million in 2024, Higgins is just entering his prime and looks poised for a huge payday this offseason.
CBS Sports ranked Higgins as the No. 1 free agent in this year’s class, with a projected market value of four years, $101.7 million ($25.4 million average annual value).
The free agency signing period officially begins at 4 p.m. ET on March 12. Prior to that, during the negotiation period from March 10 to 3:59 p.m. ET on March 12, clubs are permitted to contact, and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become unrestricted free agents upon the expiration of their 2024 player contracts at 4 p.m. ET on March 12.
