Late last month, Maxwell Riley publicly announced his recruitment has come down to just Clemson and Ohio State.
The 4-star talent, out of Avon Lake High School, is not only one of the top offensive linemen in the country, he’s ranked No. 70 overall. Riley is also the second-highest-rated recruit in the state of Ohio.
The 6-foot-5, 280-pound prospect has visited Clemson about half a dozen times now, with the most recent coming for the blowout win over The Citadel in November.
Riley was planning to get back to campus for the Elite Retreat when it was originally scheduled for Jan. 25. With the event having been pushed back to March 8, Riley now won’t be able to attend due to a conflict with his high school track schedule.
On Thursday, Riley told The Clemson Insider that he was still planning to get back to Clemson at some point in the spring, but at this time, he isn’t sure of a date.
The blue-chip talent was in Columbus for Ohio State’s national championship celebration late last month. Keep in mind, living in Ohio, it’s much easier to get to Columbus than it is to Clemson.
Riley also said that he was still on track to make a decision in the near future.
“I’ve been going through the recruiting process since January of my freshman year,” Riley recently told TCI. “I’ve had the opportunity to visit a lot of schools and stuff.”
At one time, he said a commitment could come as early as January or February, but he wants to get back to Clemson before making any decision. Since that can’t happen until spring practice amps up, don’t expect one before then.
As things stand currently, the plan is to visit each school once more in the spring, then sit down and make that ultimate decision. Whether or not the Tigers win out remains to be seen, but if you’re Clemson you certainly have to like your chances.
