TCI Recruiting Roundup: Multiple Candidates Emerge as Clemson’s Next RB Target

Jaylen McGill’s commitment to Rutgers didn’t last long.

McGill just announced a verbal pledge to the Scarlet Knights on Jan. 25, then on Wednesday decommitted.

The 4-star in-state prospect (MountainView Prep) is the only running back in the 2026 recruiting class to currently hold an offer from Clemson. McGill picked that offer up back in September after an unofficial visit for the home opening win over App State.

However, despite the decommitment, expect Clemson to move on and expand the board at the position in the very near future. Running backs coach C.J. Spiller has been engaged with several different players at the position, and multiple backs are expected to take spring visits.

Which direction Clemson chooses to go is yet to be determined, but there are a handful of candidates to keep an eye on throughout the spring.

4-star Carsyn Baker (Langston Hughes, Fairburn, GA) is slated to visit for the first time for the Elite Retreat on March 8 after Spiller paid him two visits during the contact period.

“I really want to see how coach Spiller gets down with the running backs, how he does it,” Baker recently told TCI. “Get around with the rest of the coaching staff and keep building the relationship. Looking at the campus because I never been. Talk to a couple of players and see how it is out there.”

Baker rushed for 1,282 yards as a junior with 13 touchdowns. He had six games with more than 100 yards on the ground and averaged 8.8 yards per carry. Rivals ranks Baker No. 169 overall and No. 10 among all running backs.

Spiller also twice visited with 4-star Jae Lamar (Colquitt County, Moultrie, GA). The 6-foot, 205-pound back is a Top 150 talent and ranks No. 14 among all running backs in the 247 Composite Rankings.

While Lamar isn’t expected to attend the Elite Retreat, sources tell TCI he is eyeing a visit later in March. The exact date has yet to be set. Whenever it is, it will be his first time visiting campus.

3-star CJ Givers (Fellowship Christian, Roswell, GA) is another name worth monitoring. Givers has visited Clemson on multiple occasions in the past and also got a visit from Spiller during the contact period. It was a meeting that lasted more than 90 minutes.

“Just telling me a little more about Clemson,” Givers told TCI last month. “Answering some of the questions that me and my parents had about the school. Because my parents set in on the meeting with me as well. Just telling us about their schedule. How Coach Swinney works things there at the school.”

Ohio State offered Givers on Monday. With the Buckeyes pulling the trigger, Givers’ recruitment is likely about to hit another level. Wisconsin, Pitt, Georgia Tech, Virginia and NC State are some of the others to have already offered.

As of this writing, Givers has no date set to visit Clemson in the spring, but that could change. He most recently visited Georgia Tech for its Junior Day the first weekend in February.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound back rushed for more than 1,400 yards as a junior and averaged more than nine yards per carry. He also caught 13 passes for another 182 yards and scored 21 total touchdowns.
