Tigers Rise from the Ashes to Beat Elon

CLEMSON – Elon’s mascot is known as the mythical Phoenix, which burns up and rises from its ashes.

However, it was Clemson Softball that rose back from the ashes in Friday’s 4-3 victory over the Phoenix at McWhorter Stadium.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, senior Maddie Moore singled up the middle with two outs to bring home Kennedy Ariail and Marian Collins with the tying and go-ahead run.

Pitcher Macey Citron then clinched the victory with a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

Moore’s game-winning hit came with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Down 3-2, the Tigers loaded the bases for Moore after Ava Wilson singled, and Collins and Brockenbrough drew walks.

Clemson (6-6) finished the game with six hits and was led by Wilson’s two hits and one run scored. Moore and Brockenbrough led the Tigers with two RBIs.

Elon took an early lead with a two-run shot to left field by Allee Seering in the first inning. Cintron, however, settled in and only allowed two hits after the home run. She struck out 10 batters, improving her record to 3-2.  The Tigers offense struggled to get their offense going. But they finally found some holes in the fourth inning.

A two-out single up the middle by Brockenbrough put two runs on the board for the Tigers and tied the game, 2-2.

Elon answered in the fifth inning to take back the lead, 3-2, scoring on a double from Hatzopoulos.
