Clemson Displays Dominance in PC Win

CLEMSON- After an anemic first four innings for No. 11 Clemson’s offense, a six-run, four-hit burst and a bases-loaded triple two innings later launched the Tigers to an 11-2 win over Presbyterian College Wednesday afternoon.

After recording no runs on three hits in the first four innings, Clemson’s (12-1) offense came to life when consecutive singles from left fielder Jack Crighton and first baseman Tryston McCladdie put two Tigers on base with no outs for the first time of the afternoon. A sacrifice fly from second baseman Jarren Purify knocked the first run in for the Tigers, and the momentum continued to flow.

Crighton finished 3-of-4 from the plate in his eighth appearance this season, tacking on his sixth, seventh, and eighth hits of the year. Purify knocked in his ninth and RBI of the young season with the sac fly. He also provided one of the Tigers’ only hits in the first four innings with a double down the left-field line.

After the Tigers got on the scoreboard for the first time, they did not cool down until four Blue Hose pitchers were retired in one inning. Clemson rallied to score four more two-out runs in the fifth inning thanks to a double down the first base line from Dominic Listi, a single from Josh Paino, and three drawn walks.

Listi, who played center field in Cam Cannarella’s absence, extended his hitting streak to twelve consecutive games with the fifth-inning double and a leadoff single in the first. In every game that the veteran has played with the Tigers this season, he has come up with a hit.

The Blue Hose (7-7) got the scoring started one inning before Clemson’s burst of offense with a single from designated hitter Zach Randolph followed by a home run courtesy of left fielder Nick Ouzts. However, No PC base runners made it back home after Ouzts’ centerfield shot in the fourth inning.

Two innings after Clemson took the lead, the Tigers got going again when Purify rocketed a bases-loaded triple to score Listi, Ciufo, and McCladdie. Purify improved to 3-of-4 from the plate with the triple and added three more RBIs to his earlier sac fly. The sophomore already has 13 RBIs this season.

Tyrell Williams started on the mound for the Blue Hose and gave up three runs on six hits in 4.2 innings of work. However, Williams held the Tigers scoreless for four innings. After Williams exited the bump, PC brought in six more pitchers in 4.1 innings. The Blue Hose bullpen was unable to contain Clemson’s offense, however, and allowed eight runs and six hits, with three strikeouts and six walks over 4.1 innings.

Freshman lefty Brendon Bennett got the start for the Tigers and allowed no runs, one hit, no walks, and one strikeout in two innings of work. Right-handed pitcher Chance Fitzgerald replaced him in the third, giving up two hits and two runs in three innings of work. Five other Tiger pitchers came in after Fitzgerald and gave up four hits and no runs.
