CLEMSON — The Tigers have been on a roll, and the results of this one show.
The Clemson Tigers Softball team (16-6) defeated the Charleston Southern Buccaneers (9-8) in the first game of their doubleheader this evening, shutting out the Buccaneers with a score of 7-0.
Charleston Southern never had a chance to get anything started, only earning two hits in the entire game. With the defense maintaining a hold of anything that the Buccaneers were trying to achieve, Clemson’s offense got a hold of multiple home runs that shot up the score.
For the first three innings, the Tiger defense played stellar. Clemson did not allow a single hit, and pitcher Brooke McCubbin pitched with a vengeance. With their dominant defense, the offense was able to take control. After a wild pitch in the first inning, senior Alex Brown scored off a wild pitch. Freshman Macey Cintron followed with a single, bringing home teammate Maddie Moore for the game’s first two scores.
No scores were made from then until the third inning, where left fielder Sam Minish scored after two of her teammates hit singles. After that, Brown found home plate after Moore hit a single of her own. It was then when first baseman Julia Knowler hit her eighth home run of the season, sending the ball 263 feet and bringing herself and Moore home to go up by six.
In the very next inning, shortstop Marian Collins hit a home run of her own to make the score 7-0. The Buccaneers came close to earning their first score in the following inning, failing to get home with two on the base.
After the Tigers came up empty in the bottom of the sixth, coming so close to scoring with the bases loaded, Charleston Southern had one last shot. Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t get on the board, and Clemson earned the shutout victory.
McCubbin earned the win, pitching a total of 46 pitches while allowing only one hit and zero runs. Clemson now heads into Game 2 of their doubleheader against Charleston Southern.
