Jags HC on Key to Getting Lawrence’s Performance to Match Talent Level

It wasn’t too long ago when Trevor Lawrence was thought of as a “can’t-miss” quarterback prospect in 2021, surrounded by no shortage of hype and buzz when he was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the No. 1 overall pick in that year’s NFL Draft.

Fast forward to the present, and the former Clemson star and Jaguars franchise quarterback is getting ready for his fifth NFL season in 2025. He now has plenty of experience in the league with 60 career regular season starts and two playoff starts under his belt entering 2025.

Lawrence’s new head coach in Jacksonville, Liam Coen, joined the NFL Network broadcast at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis this past week.

Lawrence has been through ups and downs in his pro career to this point while battling adversity and various injuries as well. With Coen now at the helm of the Jaguars squad, he was asked what he thinks will be key to getting Lawrence’s performance on the field to match where his talent level is.

“I think just get consistency. Just get him playing at a high level, consistent,” Coen said. “He’s got all the talent. He’s got the work ethic. He’s tough, both mentally and physically. He can stand in there, take hits. He’s probably just taken a little bit too many hits as of right now. We’ve got to keep him upright, get him a little bit better run game, get him a little bit more consistency and play better on the defensive side of the ball to help him out.”

Lawrence completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 2,045 yards with 11 touchdown passes and seven interceptions over 10 games during the 2024 season. The 25-year-old was placed on injured reserve Dec. 4 after his shoulder injury and concussion, and he underwent successful surgery on Dec. 17 to repair the AC joint sprain in his left shoulder.

Over his first four NFL seasons, Lawrence has completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 13,815 yards and 69 touchdowns with 46 interceptions in his 60 games. Prior to the 2024 season, the Jaguars signed Lawrence to a massive five-year, $275 million contract extension.

Coen is already the third head coach Lawrence has had in Jacksonville. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator is regarded as an excellent play-caller/offensive mind, and Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield – a former No. 1 overall pick, like Lawrence – enjoyed a career year in Tampa under Coen in 2024.

Now, Coen is tasked with maximizing Lawrence’s talent and potential, and Coen said much of his head coach interviews with the Jaguars and owner Shad Khan centered around Lawrence and the plan for him moving forward.

“That was a strong part of this,” said the 39-year-old Coen, who has been an assistant coach for 15 seasons, with five of those campaigns at the NFL level.

“Shad had a vision for what he wanted to do offensively. Trying to get the most out of Trevor – that was a big part of this. And having a little bit of experience with some successful quarterbacks at both the college and the NFL level, that was definitely a huge part of this decision, and I felt like the vision was aligned.”
