Clemson men’s basketball head coach Brad Brownell met with the media on Wednesday as the Tigers get set to open play in the ACC Tournament in Charlotte on Thursday.
Brownell addressed his name coming up in rumors for the Indiana coaching vacancy.
“I’m not going to talk about potential jobs,” said Brownell, a native of Evansville, Ind. “I have a great job, and I’m 100 percent focused on this team and what we’ve got ahead of us and trying to do everything I can to help us continue to win the next game.”
Coming off an Elite Eight appearance last season, Brownell has led the Tigers to a 26-5 record this season — a program record for regular season wins. Clemson has won a school-record 18 ACC games this season, including 15 by double-digits — tied for third-most in league history.
The Tigers cracked the top 10 of the latest AP Top 25 Men’s College Basketball Poll, marking the first time Clemson has been ranked in the AP Top 10 in 16 years (January 2009).
Now in his 15th season in charge of the Tigers, Brownell is the all-time winningest coach in Clemson history and has taken the Tigers to the 2024 Elite Eight, 2021 NCAA Tournament, 2018 Sweet 16, 2011 NCAA Tournament and multiple NIT appearances.
Last season, Clemson reached the Elite Eight for just the second time in history and the first time in 44 years. The Brownell-led Tigers beat New Mexico, Baylor and Arizona en route to a 24-win campaign.
Regarding the Indiana job rumors, Brownell mentioned in response to a follow-up question “how much I really like Clemson.”
“You’re grateful that you’re doing good things, right. That’s what’s going to happen if you’re doing the right things and you’re winning enough games,” Brownell said of his name floating around in job rumors. “So, I’ve never been a self-promoter, and that’s partly because how much I really like Clemson. Obviously I sent both daughters here and I’ve been here 15 years. I think this place is really a special place, and I’m proud of what we’ve built.”
Clemson earned a double-bye and will open play in the ACC Tournament on Thursday in Charlotte’s Spectrum Center. As the No. 3 seed, Clemson will begin play at 9:30 p.m. on ESPN/ESPN2 against the winner of SMU vs. Syracuse.
