It’s not often that a recruit spends five nights on a college campus for one recruiting visit.
That is exactly what Adam Guthrie did last week, as the four-star offensive lineman arrived in Clemson on Tuesday ahead of the Elite Retreat and stayed through Sunday.
It was a life-changing visit for Guthrie, with the blue-chip talent announcing a commitment to the Tigers on Friday.
“It’s just so unique,” Guthrie told The Clemson Insider. “It is so different how they go about their business. Just the family atmosphere and the culture they have.”
Guthrie knew from the very first time he visited Clemson that it was where he wanted to be. However, before any decision could be made, he had to get his parents to town so they could also fall in love with the program Dabo Swinney built. That happened last week as they accompanied Guthrie on the trip, as did his older brother, an offensive lineman at Campbell University.
Fall in love his parents did, so last Wednesday, Guthrie told them he was ready to commit. On Friday, he called offensive line coach Matt Luke, requesting a meeting with him and Swinney to deliver the news.
“I just felt ready and comfortable with the decision,” Guthrie said. “I have seen everywhere in the country, so I was ready to shut it down.”
After Swinney made sure Guthrie was fully ready to shut his recruitment down, the celebration began.
“He just wanted to make sure that I knew of the decision I was making and that I was fully ready to shut it down,” Guthrie said. “Then he started jumping up on chairs and stuff.”
Guthrie was the first of three offensive linemen to commit over the weekend. Four-stars Grant Wise and Chance Barclay would follow suit, joining four-star Braden Wilmes, who announced a verbal pledge late last year.
Those four give Clemson what is arguably its best class of offensive linemen in quite some time, seeing as two are ranked inside the Top 100 and another inside of the Top 250. Guthrie takes pride in knowing he plays a part in that while giving much of the credit to Luke.
“It means a lot,” Guthrie said. “Having coach Luke there, he is a big help to that. All of us who are committed fully trust him. Just going from there and having belief in him and coach Swinney, that means a lot.”
While the culture at Clemson factored in heavily for Guthrie, so did the opportunity to be developed by Luke.
“Me and coach Luke talk all the time,” Guthrie added. “He came to my school multiple times and just showed love to me. After coming back and spending time around him and his family, I know he is a great coach and a great leader.”
On top of the three new offensive line pledges, the Tigers picked up commitments from four more players over the past few days. The 2026 class now features a dozen commitments in a class that currently ranks second in the country.
For that reason, Guthrie sees a Clemson program that is on the verge of once again competing for national titles, and he can’t wait to be a part of it.
“It’s just the fact that they feel like they care more about you as a person than a football player,” Guthrie said. “They want to make you the best man possible. And obviously, win a lot of championships on the way too.”
