CLEMSON — Cade Klubnik was ready for Spring Break on Wednesday, at least that is the way Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney saw it.
The Tigers held their first full scrimmage of the spring Wednesday at Memorial Stadium, and Swinney said his starting quarterback was already checked out.
“I did not think Cade had a good day today,” Swinney said. “I thought he was very average. I think he was checked out.”
Clemson University does not officially have Spring Break until Monday. However, Swinney always breaks from spring practice the Wednesday before so players will be able to leave early for break if their schedule allows for it.
Klubnik gave Swinney the impression he was already mentally out the door and on the beach somewhere.
“I think he was already gone to Cabo or something,” Swinney said. “I do not think he was ready to go today and maybe it is because he did think he was going to get a lot of reps. So, I did not think he had his best day. He was not very focused.”
Swinney admitted the plan was not to use Klubnik much in the scrimmage. This was the scrimmage they wanted to see what backup Christopher Vizzina could do in a live situation, so they held Klubnik back some.
Vizzina got most of the first team reps.
“CV did some good stuff. He took his first drive down and scored,” Swinney said. “Now that was the benefit of a real stupid penalty by one of our DBs. He got an unsportsmanlike (penalty) so that gave them new life and they went down and scored.
“It was good to see CV take advantage.”
Overall, the Clemson offense had some miscues. Though Swinney did not say who, but his quarterbacks threw several interceptions in the two-hour scrimmage.
“I thought defensively they were awesome in the redzone,” Swinney said. “They turned the offense over a few times, which was good to see from the defensive perspective.
“I thought we were too casual with the ball on the offensive side.”
The Tigers are off from spring practice the rest of this week and all of next week. They return to the practice fields on March 24.
Clemson will conclude spring drills on April 5 with its annual Orange & White Spring Game.
