Swinney on Randall at RB: ‘He’s a Problem’

Adam Randall has spent the last three seasons at wide receiver for Clemson, but he’s working with the running backs this spring.

Randall debuted at running back in the Tigers’ loss to Texas in the College Football Playoff last season. The rising senior did well enough at running back where the coaching staff decided to see how he’d do with a whole spring to learn the position.

Randall flashed during Clemson’s first scrimmage of spring practice on Wednesday, according to head coach Dabo Swinney, who called the 6-foot-2, 225-pounder “a problem” for an opposing defense at the running back position.

“It’s been a lot of fun working with Adam. He’s a problem,” Swinney said following the scrimmage at Memorial Stadium.

“It’s an interesting matchup with him because he’s so dynamic in the passing game, and how do you play him?”

In the College Football Playoff game against Texas, Randall ripped off a 41-yard run in the second quarter and finished the game as Clemson’s leading rusher with 44 yards on four carries.

One game earlier, Randall became a hero in Clemson lore after returning a kickoff 41 yards in the final 30 seconds to help put the Tigers in position to win last year’s ACC Championship Game against SMU. Clemson, of course, won the game two plays later when kicker Nolan Hauser made a 56-yard field goal as time expired.

In his three seasons at Clemson, Randall has recorded 48 catches for 533 yards and two touchdowns over 37 games (seven starts).

Randall’s experience as a pass-catcher is helping him in the transition to running back, and Swinney has been impressed by what he’s seen from Randall to this point in spring ball.

“He’s flashed really all spring,” Swinney said. “He looks confident. He’s smart.”
