Former Tigers Discuss the Games They Remember Most

After earning their first Super Bowl championship rings last month, former Clemson standouts Will Shipley, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and K.J. Henry of the Philadelphia Eagles were featured on the latest episode of Clemson Football’s official podcast, 2 Right Turns.

In one segment of the episode, Shipley, Trotter and Henry fielded some mailbag questions from fans. One of the questions was, “What Clemson game do you find yourself reminiscing about the most?”

Shipley answered first and pointed to Clemson’s 30-20 win over Florida State at Death Valley on Oct. 30, 2021, when both he and Trotter were true freshmen.

After a defensive touchdown gave Florida State a 20-17 lead late in the fourth quarter, Shipley capped a three-play, 58-yard drive with a 21-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers the lead for good with 2:53 to play as the Tigers held on to beat the Seminoles.

Shipley rushed for 128 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries in that contest — the first 100-yard rushing performance by a Clemson true freshman since 2018.

“For me, the first one that always comes to mind is just Florida State — our freshman year, Trot – in the Valley,” Shipley said. “I don’t think it was a night game. I think it was a mid-afternoon game. But yeah, that was probably one of the most special moments from my college career. So, that’ll always be one that sticks to me. For sure, Florida State my freshman year in the Valley.”

Henry gave his answer next, recalling a game from his fifth and final season with the Tigers — Clemson’s 30-20 victory over NC State in a top-10 matchup at Memorial Stadium on Oct. 1, 2022.

A native of Winston-Salem, N.C., Henry posted two tackles, including one for loss, and the fourth fumble recovery of his career. The fumble recovery came midway through the fourth quarter and ultimately led to a Clemson touchdown that extended the Tigers’ lead to 30-13 with 3:04 remaining.

“I’m going to go NC State, top-10 matchup, that night game at home in the Valley. That was fun,” Henry said. “That’s probably my number one, that’s one I think about a lot. Just having that top-10 matchup with a team that I have no problem saying I do not like at all, and to be able to just kill the noise that they could even mess with us – that was fun. That one was fun.”

As for Trotter, he circled the 2022 ACC Championship Game at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on Dec. 3, 2022, when big performances in all three phases of the game gave the Tigers a blowout 39-10 victory over the Tar Heels.

Trotter balled out and set an ACC Championship Game record with 3.0 sacks among his team-high-tying nine tackles, while Clemson’s defense came away with a touchdown, three takeaways, four sacks, eight quarterback hurries and seven tackles for a loss.

Then-freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik entered the game on Clemson’s third drive, leading the Tigers to scores on five of his first six drives, and finished the game 20-of-24 passing for 279 yards and a touchdown while adding 30 rushing yards and another score en route to the game’s MVP honors. Nate Wiggins blocked a field goal attempt and returned an errant pass by Drake Maye 98 yards for a touchdown to blow the game open in the third quarter.

“For me, I’d probably say the ACC Championship Game, that being the championship that we got. And it being a night game, both sides of the ball just dominating,” Trotter said. “I feel like on defense, we were playing great. They got a long pick-six… Cade just throwing bombs down the field, the offense just going off. I feel like that was a great game for me, one that I really remember.”
