Notre Dame ends Tigers’ 17-Game win Streak

CLEMSON — The good news is Clemson won its three-game series against Notre Dame this weekend.

The bad news is the Tigers’ 17-game win streak came to a close thanks to a 7-3 loss to the Irish on Sunday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. It was the fourth longest win streak in Clemson baseball history.

Sunday was an all-around bad day at the ballpark for No. 10 Clemson. Starter Justin LeGuernic gave up two home runs in the first inning, the defense committed four errors, while the offense hit into three double plays.

Clemson pitching also hit two batters, walked seven and threw one wild pitch. There were also a couple of passed balls.

All in all, it was a bad day at the ballpark for the Tigers.

Notre Dame (11-6, 1-5 ACC) jumped on LeGuernic right from the start. Jared Zimbardo opened the game with a lead-off home run and a few moments later Estevan Moreno rocketed a two-run homer to leftfield for a 3-0 lead.

The Irish, who had just seven hits, extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning by taking advantage of Clemson mistakes and bad pitching.

The Tigers (19-2, 2-1 ACC) pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the fourth when Andrew Ciufo singled to leftfield with two outs to score Jacob Jarrell.

Notre Dame again scratched two more runs across the plate in the top of the sixth inning before the Tigers answered with two of their own in the bottom of the sixth.

Josh Paino singled to right center to score Dominic Listi, while Jarren Purify came home a few moments later on Collin Priest’s sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Cam Cannarella led the Tigers at the plate with a 2-for-4 afternoon, while Jacob Jarrell was 2-for-4, as well.
