When Chauncey Golston got a look at Dexter Lawrence on the jumbotron during a game between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants last season, Golston couldn’t believe what he saw.
Golston, a former Cowboys defensive end, was stunned by the massive size of the Giants’ three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle — the 6-foot-4, 340-pound Lawrence.
“When the Cowboys played [the Giants] last year, I was on the sideline and I was looking at him on the jumbotron,” Golston said to the media this week.
“I’m like, there is no way that guy is that big. Like, what the [heck]?” Golston added, laughing.
Golston, who spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Cowboys after being selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, is now teammates with Lawrence on the Giants’ defensive line.
Golston agreed to terms with the Giants this week on what is reportedly a three-year, $19.5 million deal, and he’s eager to share the field with and learn from Lawrence.
“I’m excited,” said Golston, who has nine career sacks, 17 quarterback hits, eight tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble in his NFL career so far.
“I’m excited to work with him and pick his brain, talk to some experienced guys and see how I can improve my game.”
Lawrence saw his 2024 season end early with an elbow injury but still earned his third straight Pro Bowl selection after posting a career-high nine sacks and career-high eight tackles for loss in 12 games, while recording 44 total tackles, 16 quarterback hits, a forced fumble and one pass defended.
Now entering his seventh NFL season in 2025, Lawrence has racked up 310 total tackles, 36 tackles for loss and 30 sacks in 92 career games (85 starts) since being selected by the Giants in the first round (17th overall) of the 2019 draft.
At Clemson, Lawrence was a three-time All-ACC selection and a first-team All-American in 2018. He entered the NFL Draft after completing his three-year Clemson career (2016-18) with 162 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, 43 quarterback pressures, five pass breakups, a caused fumble and three recovered fumbles over 40 games (36 starts).
