Cannarella’s Five Hits Leads Tigers in Victory

CLEMSON – Cam Cannarella’s five hit night leads the No. 7 Clemson Tigers to a 6-4 win over The Citadel on Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. With the win, the Tigers improve to 20-2 while the Bulldogs fall to 11-10. 

Clemson got the scoring started first after a double from Dominic Listi and an RBI single by Cannarella to put the Tigers up 1-0.

The Citadel took the lead with two runs in the third inning. The first two batters reached base from a hit by pitch and a walk. The next batter got a sac bunt down and scored on a throwing error to first by Clemson. Another run scored after an RBI single scored the runner at third. 

In the bottom of the frame, the Tigers scored two of their own. Listi walked, Cannarella singled, and List came in on Josh Paino’s RBI sac fly. Luke Gaffney’s base hit and Collin Priest’s fielder’s choice scored Cannarella after a throwing error from the Bulldogs. 

In the top of fifth, The Citadel scratched a run of their own after hitting three base hits to tie the game at 3-3. 

Clemson regained the lead in the same inning. Cannarella singled and advanced to third after a wild pitch and stolen base. Josh Paino came up big with a 2-run homerun for a 5-3 lead. 

The lead was cut in half by The Citadel after a single and an RBI double in the sixth. 

The Tigers added an insurance run in the eighth. Andrew Ciufo worked a one out walk, moved to second on a muffed throw and came into score on a Jarren Purify single. 

Clemson pitcher Nathan Dvorsky (4-0) earned the win after pitching 1.1 innings in relief. Yates Bland (1-3) suffered the loss in 1 inning of relief and gave up 2 runs in the inning. Mahlstedt earned his seventh save while pitching the final 2 innings. 

The Tigers finished the night with 10 hits, led by Cannarella who had 5 hits. The Bulldogs ended with 8 hits.

Clemson will host The Citadel on Wednesday for a second midweek matchup. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
