CLEMSON – No. 7 Clemson scored six first inning runs en route to a 11-1, run-rule win over The Citadel on Wednesday evening at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. With the win, the Tigers sweep the two-game midweek series and move to 21-2 while the Bulldogs fall to 11-11.
Clemson wasted no time jumping out to a big lead in the first inning. Dom Listi and Jarren Purify each drew walks before Cam Cannarella hit a RBI single to make it 1-0. Josh Paino followed with a sac fly to extend the lead to 2-0. Tristan Bissetta and Luke Gaffney hit consecutive singles, with Gaffney scoring Cannarella before a RBI double from Collin Priest stretched the lead to 5-0. Jack Crighton drove in the final run of the inning one a RBI groundout for a big six-run first inning.
The Citadel plated a run on a walk, HBP, and RBI single to cut the lead to 6-1.
The Tigers answered right back in the bottom of the frame with four runs. Gaffney led off with a single, Priest walked, and McCladdie hit a no-doubt three-run homer to extend the lead to 9-1. Listi followed with a solo shot to make it 10-1.
Clemson put the finishing touches on the game in the seventh. TP Wentwoth was HBP with one out and Crighton worked a walk to set up McCladdie for the walk-off RBI single.
Clemson reliever Chance Fitzgerald (2-0), one of five pitchers on the day, earned the win with 2.1 innings of one-run ball. The Citadel starter Zane Davis (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing five runs on three hits and two walks in 0.1 innings.
The Tigers finished the game with 11 hits, led by Gaffney and McCladdie with three, while the Bulldogs tallied four hits in the contest.
