Christian Chancellor is no stranger to Clemson football.
Living so close by, the 2027 in-state DB (Daniel) has already made multiple visits to campus and has worked out at Dabo Swinney’s high school camp multiple times. However, his ties to the program go back further than that.
Chancellor is a legacy recruit. His father, Chris Chancellor, was a multi-year starter in the Tigers’ secondary back during the early years of Swinney’s tenure. The elder Chancellor started 44 games, recording nine interceptions.
Chancellor was back on campus at the end of March for the Underclass Experience, and this visit was different from those in the past.
“It was a lot more different,” Chancellor told The Clemson Insider. “You got to learn a whole bunch of things about them outside of football. They have a thing called PAW Journey, and we learned a lot of stuff about that, and a whole bunch of careers. Then, their graduation rate. You learn a whole bunch of stuff. They go more into context outside of just football and how their program works.”
Part of the visit included attending a practice, and Chancellor came away impressed by the juice new defensive coordinator Tom Allen brings to the staff.
“The energy they have over there is amazing,” Chancellor added. “I love their coaching staff. I love Dabo, Coach Reed. I love the whole coaching staff and how coach Tom Allen brings so much energy to the defense. I just love to see that in practice and how hard they are all working and stuff. That just proves the coaches are doing a great job.”
Being the son of a player who had so much success at Clemson and with him being so close, some of the members of the coaching staff are already very familiar with Chancellor. At the same time, trying to live up to the expectations that come with being a legacy guy can be challenging.
“There absolutely is a lot of pressure,” Chancellor said. “There definitely is. I got a lot of high expectations for me and stuff like that. I just got to prove to everybody that I’m up to those expectations.”
Making sure no one outworks him is how Chancellor tries to live up to those expectations.
“Got to have a great work ethic,” he said. “Going up there and just showing my abilities to do things. Working hard and doing all of those things.”
As a sophomore, Chancellor was credited with 41 tackles, five pass breakups and he picked off two passes. One of those he returned for an interception.
Last weekend, the in-state prospect was in Charlotte, working out at an Under Armor Camp.
Chancellor plans to return to Clemson in the summer and once again work out at camp. And he’s hopeful that at some point, he’s afforded an opportunity to follow in his father’s footsteps
“That would mean the world to me,” Chancellor said. “That would just be a blessing. A dream come true.”
