Stanford Snaps Tigers’ 8-Game win Streak

CLEMSON — You cannot win them all or, in Stanford’s case, you cannot lose them all.

The Cardinal snapped their 11-game ACC losing streak Sunday, while at the same time ending No. 4 Clemson’s eight-game win streak. Stanford got home runs from Trevor Haskins, Jimmy Nati and Brandon Larson to avoid a fourth consecutive sweep in conference play with an 11-6 victory at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Sunday marked Stanford’s first win in conference play since beating Duke on March 16.

For the second straight day, the Cardinal did their damage with two outs. They were 8 of 17 with two gone in an inning. They had eight two-out hits in Saturday’s loss. Six of their runs on Sunday came with two outs.

Clemson, on the other hand, was 1-for-10 with two outs and did not have a two-out run.

For the second straight day, the Cardinal (19-14, 6-12 ACC) produced at least 10 runs on at least 14 hits. Haskins was 4-for-6 with 2 RBIs, including a two-run homer to leftfield with two outs in the fourth inning.

The Haskins’ home run gave Stanford a 5-3 lead at the time.

Temo Becerra and Nati each had two hits and drove in three runs. Nati had a two-run blast to leftfield that went 434 feet in the fourth. Beccerra had a two-run single with two outs during a five-run fifth inning.

Nati also drove in a run with two gone in the fifth, as the Cardinal extended their lead to 10-5. Larson’s home run came with two outs in the ninth inning.

Clemson (33-6, 11-4 ACC) rallied from a 3-0 hole in the first inning to tie the game by the end of the second. Jarren Purify and Jack Crighton had RBI singles in the first and second innings to help pull the Tigers even.

After falling behind 10-5, the Tigers tried to rally for a second time in as many days. The got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Purify and Collin Priest brought home runs with back-to-back singles.

The Tigers added another run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Clemson had opportunities in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to do more damage.

However, Cam Cannarella struck out swinging with runners on first and second to end the sixth inning. Crighton had the same situation in the seventh, but he grounded out to the pitcher with two outs to end the rally.

The Tigers had runners on first and second with one out in the eighth, but Stanford centerfielder Charlie Saum robbed Cannarella of a sure double with a diving catch in left centerfield. Purify then grounded out to short to end the inning.
