Clemson ‘Definitely’ a Top School for Newest OL Offer

Mitchel Smith is in the midst of a very busy spring.

Included in the three-star offensive lineman’s (Picayune Memorial, MS) spring itinerary were two visits to Clemson. Smith was in town a couple of weeks before the conclusion of spring practice, then returned for the spring game on April 5.

Smith got to take in a spring practice during the first visit, so not only has he witnessed the team’s practice habits, he also got to get an up-close look at offensive line Matt Luke’s coaching style during a scrimmage setting on the second visit.

The two visits also gave Smith a really good feel for how Dabo Swinney runs the program.

“The bond the head coach obviously has with the players,” Smith told The Clemson Insider. “The atmosphere around the whole place is different. The coaches — how they act is different.”

Luke started recruiting Smith back in January after he visited the 6-foot-5, 320-pound prospect’s high school during the contact period. That basically served as an introductory meeting, with Luke inviting Smith to visit during the spring.

After his first visit, Smith knew he wanted to go back, and it turned out the second visit was well worth the trip. That’s the day he picked up his offer from Luke and the Tigers.

“I came down there. and I loved it,” Smith added. “I mean, we’ve been talking ever since. I mean, when I was on the visit, we talked every chance he got. He came over and talked to me during practice. All that stuff.”

Smith currently has more than two dozen offers. Vanderbilt, Florida State, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida and Kentucky have all gotten spring visits. Smith is currently on a visit to Ole Miss and still plans to hit more schools over the next week or so.

Smith has also already locked in plans to be at Clemson’s big official visit from May 30 to June 1. However, he’s already seen enough to know the Tigers are legitimate contenders.

“They have their own thing, and I loved it,” Smith said. “They are definitely a top school for me.”
