Tigers Rally to Win Series over Boston College

CLEMSON – McWhorter Stadium roared as Clemson’s Maddie Moore launched a three-run homer to take a lead over the Boston College Eagles in the Tigers’ 8-4 victory Friday.

After the Tigers trailed for three innings, four hits in the fourth, including Moore’s go-ahead shot, secured Clemson’s eighth consecutive win and sixth ACC series victory in a row.

Two innings after Moore’s offensive outburst, a double, two singles, and a home run from pitcher Macey Cintron secured the final 8-4 score.

For two innings, the Tigers (37-11, 16-4 ACC) struggled to find footing in the circle and at the plate. Though first and second basemen Alex Brown and Maddie Moore started Clemson’s day at the plate with two consecutive singles, the Tigers struggled to turn their hits into runs, leaving two stranded.

In the circle, the Eagles (19-23, 4-13 ACC) immediately challenged starting pitcher Brooke McCubbin with a leadoff double from second baseman Emma Jackson. Jackson was pushed to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a fielder’s choice.

In the second inning, two singles from Boston College first baseman Meghan Schouten and Jackson, as well as a fielder’s choice, knocked in the second run for the Eagles. Clemson failed to score again in the second, and the Eagles capitalized, extending their lead 3-0 in the third inning with a home run off of McCubbin.

The Tigers got on the board for the first time with two more singles from Brown and Moore, as well as a double from freshman Macey Cintron, who relieved McCubbin just minutes before in the top of the third.

After Cintron put up the Tigers’ first inning with no runs in the fourth in the circle, the offense went on their first tear. Right and left fielders Kylee Johnson and Taylor Pipkins both singled. Next, center fielder Jamison Brockenbrough reached on a fielder’s choice.

Brown, a Savannah, Ga., native, knocked in Pipkins with a single, and Moore successfully completed her clean-up duty, sending the other three home.

A double from Brockenbrough, singles from Moore and Brown, and Cintron’s home run finished scoring for both teams in the sixth.

Brown and Moore each finished a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate, with a combined five RBI.

“Those two (Brown and Moore) are such veteran hitters and it doesn’t matter how many outs there are, they’re going to give you quality at-bats,” head coach John Rittman said after the game. “Really proud of those two and the way they performed tonight.”

Cintron was also 2-of-3 with a double in addition to her home run while Pipkins and Brockenbrough both finished 1-for-3.

In the circle, McCubbin gave up three runs, one earned, on five hits in two innings of work. She recorded no strikeouts or walks.

Cintron pitched the other five innings in relief and allowed only one run off of six hits. She recorded one walk and strikeout and improved her record to 8-2 on the season.

Clemson has a chance to complete its second consecutive ACC sweep Sunday as the Tigers and Eagles play for the third time this weekend at McWhorter Stadium. First pitch is set for noon on Clemson’s Senior Day.

“Tomorrow’s a big, emotional day for us with Senior Day,” Rittman said. “We got to compartmentalize and save Senior Day for after the game and make sure we’re focused, knowing that we’re going to get their A-game. We need to play better than we did today.”
