A couple of Clemson men’s basketball starters from the 2024-25 season have entered the NCAA transfer portal, despite having no eligibility left.
The Clemson Insider confirmed that Ian Schieffelin and Jaeden Zackery have both entered the portal.
Although they don’t have any eligibility remaining, Schieffelin and Zackery have entered the portal, in case the NCAA were to grant a fifth year of eligibility. That’s something the NCAA has been considering, pending other litigation.
Schieffelin and Zackery are using the petitions for the 2021 season to be granted as a fifth year of eligibility for all student-athletes. According to our sources, we were told there is no rule stating that a player has to have remaining eligibility to enter the transfer portal.
By entering the transfer portal, which closes April 22 (Tuesday), it extends their window and timeline to explore options for an additional year of eligibility. Due to these loopholes, any graduating four-year senior or JUCO player can use this to extend the eligibility until the ruling has come down.
Schieffelin just finished his fourth season at Clemson, while Zackery used one year of his eligibility while playing in the junior college ranks.
We can tell you, from talking to our sources, that Schieffelin and Zackery will have the option to return to Clemson if the fifth year of eligibility is granted.
Schieffelin averaged 12.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game this past season, while Zackery averaged 11.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per contest.
