Hunter Talks Teaming Up with Lawrence

After trading up from No. 5 to get the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday night, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner – former Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter – giving Trevor Lawrence another big-time weapon to work with on the offensive side of the ball.

Hunter, who excelled at both wide receiver and cornerback in college, met with the media after being chosen No. 2 overall by the Jaguars and talked about previously meeting Lawrence in Hawaii — and now, getting to team up with Lawrence in Jacksonville.

“I actually met Trevor Lawrence in Hawaii. I actually met him in Hawaii – we were doing something for Adidas,” Hunter said. “But it was a blessing though, to be able to meet him that first time and then now I get to go meet him again, also get to play with him. We also get to go do our thing. So, it’s definitely a blessing. I’m definitely happy to go to work with him.”

Lawrence, Jacksonville’s franchise quarterback and the No. 1 overall pick out of Clemson in the 2021 NFL Draft, congratulated Hunter during a FaceTime call after he was drafted Thursday night.

“Hey, remember in Hawaii,” Hunter said to Lawrence.

“Congrats man. I remember linking up out there,” Lawrence said to his new teammate. “I was hoping we’d have a chance to get you. I thought you were going to go before us. We ended up moving up to get you.”

“Yeah, it’s all good, though. We got it all planned. We got it all together,” Hunter replied. “So, let’s get to work, man. I’ll be out there tomorrow.”

“It’s going to be special, man. Congrats dude,” Lawrence said. “I know how hard you worked for it. And it’s just the beginning for us. It’s gonna be fun. I can’t wait.”

Hunter played two seasons at Colorado from 2023-24, and in addition to winning the Heisman Trophy in 2024, he won the Walter Camp Award and was the Associated Press College Football Player of the Year. He also won the Chuck Bednarik Award for college football’s best defensive player and the Fred Biletnikoff Award for college football’s best wide receiver in 2024, becoming the first player to win both awards.

After playing at Jackson State in 2022, Hunter caught 153 passes for 1,979 yards and 20 touchdowns across his two seasons at Colorado, including 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2024. He also had seven interceptions over his two seasons at Colorado and picked off four passes in 2024.

The Jaguars are expected to play Hunter on offense and defense, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“They will on-board him by giving him a heavy dose of the wide receiver position while still playing him at his more natural position on defense,” Schefter wrote on X. “Two positions for pick No. 2.”
