Clemson scored seven runs in the first inning on Saturday night at Mewborn Field in Atlanta, Ga., and never looked back in a 19-0 victory over Georgia Tech. The 19-0 victory is the largest shutout in program history and ties the school record for the largest margin of victory in a game.
In case you are wondering, the most runs No. 19 Clemson scored in a game was 21 runs back in 2020.
The game was called after the fifth-inning due to the eight-run mercy rule. The win allowed the Tigers to take a 2-0 lead in the three-game series and win their seventh consecutive series. They also clinched at least a share of third place in the ACC standings, and will be no worse than the No. 3 seed in next month’s ACC Tournament.
The Tigers got four hits from freshman Macey Cintron, including a three-run home run in the fourth inning, while fellow freshman Marian Collins had a three-run homer herself in the run-rule-victory. Jamison Brockenbrough also tallied two hits in the victory as seven Tigers produced at least one hit in the starting lineup.
Clemson (40-12, 18-5 ACC) brought 12 batters to the plate to open the first inning as Julia Knowler and Cintron recorded back-to-back doubles with one out to drive in the first two runs of the game. Two batters later, Collins lifted a 3-1 pitch to centerfield for her three-run shot to put the Tigers up 5-0.
Later in the inning with two outs, Maddie Moore was credited with an RBI after drawing a walk in her second at-bat, before Brockenbrough scored on wild pitch for the seventh run.
After scoring one run in the second inning, the Tigers added five in the third inning to take a 13-0 lead. Alex Brown got an RBI single and then Moore blasted a two-run home run to right field. Later in the the inning, Taylor Pipkins singled down the third base line with one out to plate Cintron for the 13th run of the night.
Brown scored a second run on a wild pitch before Cintron followed with her three-run homer down the left field line off Tymber Harris’ first pitch. The home run gave the Tigers their 17-0 lead after four inning.
The Tigers added two more runs in the fifth inning to close the scoring.
Brooke McCubbin earned the win in the circle for Clemson. The senior allowed just three hits in four scoreless innings of work.
Tech’s Camden Anders suffered the loss. She allowed three runs on two its and was only able to record one out before being replaced in the first inning.
Clemson finished the night with 15 hits, as nine different Tigers got a hit. Cintron finished her night 4-for-5 with four RBIs, HR, and three runs scored. Brockenbrough went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Moore was also 2-for-3 with three RBIs, HR and three runs scored. Knowler was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double.
Georgia Tech (26-20, 10-10 ACC) is now 0-12 all-time vs. Clemson.
