Marian Collins doubled to right centerfield to plate Aby Vieira with the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning, as No. 19 Clemson rallied to to beat Georgia Tech, 8-2, Sunday at Mewborn Field in Atlanta, Ga. The come-from-behind win allowed the Tigers to complete their sweep of the Yellow Jackets in the three-game series and improve to 14-0 all-time against Tech.
Clemson (41-12, 19-5 ACC) trailed 2-0 heading into the sixth inning, but freshman Macey Cintron changed all of that with one swing of the bat. With one out and teammate Julia Knowler on first base after drawing a walk, Cintron unloaded on a 1-2 pitch from Tech starter Sophia Voyles to tie the game.
The true freshman sent the no-doubt home run over the wall in left centerfield.
Vieira followed with a double to right centerfield and then scored the go-ahead run on Collins’ double to give Clemson a 3-2 lead at the time. The Tigers then loaded the bases to run Voyles out of the game before Alex Brown singled down the left field line to plate two more runs for a commanding 5-2 advantage.
The Tigers sent nine batters to the plate in the decisive sixth inning and recorded five hits.
Clemson added a Cintron solo home run in the seventh inning, while Collins, also a true freshman, launched a two-run bomb of her own to rightfield to conclude the scoring. The Tigers end the regular season by win 11 of their last 12 games.
Cintron, who was 7-for-12 in the three-game series, finished the afternoon 2-for-3 at the plate with the two home runs and 3 RBIs. Collins was also 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs driven in as well.
Jamison Brockenbrough was 2-for-4, while Knowler also had two hits on three at-bats, including one double.
Before Clemson’s sixth inning, Voyles controlled the Tigers. Knowler had the only two hits, as the righty shut them out through five innings. She recorded seven strikeouts before the sixth inning when Clemson finally got to her.
Georgia Tech (26-21, 10-11) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Gracyn Tucker sent a Reese Basinger 2-1 offering over the wall in left centerfield.
Clemson’s defense, however, kept the Tigers in the game despite the Yellow Jackets having several opportunities to gain control.
In the third inning, Tech loaded the bases with one out. However, Maddie Moore made a diving catch on a Tucker liner to double up Addison Leschber at first base to end the inning.
The Jackets had runners on second and third with one out in the fourth inning. But, again, good pitching and defense kept Clemson in the game. The Tigers allowed just one run to come home, as relief pitcher Brooke McCubbin got Caroline Patterson to hit back to the circle for the second out and then got Gottlieb to ground out to end the threat with little damage done.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, Paige Vukadinovich came home with an run on the Patterson comeback to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead after four innings. Georgia Tech, however, finished the afternoon 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
McCubbin, who came in during the fourth inning, pitched four scoreless innings and allowed just one hit to earn the win in the circle. She improved to 13-5 in the circle.
