The chase continues.
Five-star Tyler Atkinson (Grayson, Loganville, GA) remains Clemson’s top linebacker target.
After being promoted to linebackers coach, one of Ben Boulware’s first recruiting stops was to see Atkinson. Head coach Dabo Swinney and safeties coach Mickey Conn accompanied Boulware on that initial visit. Conn has longstanding ties to Grayson.
That wasn’t Boulware’s only visit to see Atkinson either. He was determined to get the Tigers back in it for Atkinson, and that he’s done. The five-star talent would visit Clemson for the first time in about a year for the Elite Retreat in March.
Now, Boulware is attempting to get Atkinson back on campus for the big official visit weekend from May 30 to June 2. The first-year linebackers coach was back in to see Atkinson and his father last Wednesday, with Atkinson telling The Clemson Insider they spent about half of the day together.
“We got to spend some really good time together,” Atkinson told TCI. “He came and checked out one of my training sessions, and then we all just talked and vibed over dinner.”
While Atkinson has yet to lock in any official visits publicly, it’s safe to assume at this point that Clemson will indeed get one. Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama and Auburn are some of the other schools thought to be in serious contention.
Last season, Atkinson was the MaxPreps Junior of the Year after helping lead Grayson to a 6A state title in the state of Georgia. He was also an Army-Navy Bowl participant earlier this year.
The blue-chip prospect finished his junior campaign with 166 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, 46 quarterback hurries, an interception and a forced fumble.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound recruit ranks No. 8 overall in the 247 Composite Rankings and No. 1 among all linebackers. He also ranks No. 1 in the talent-rich state of Georgia.
